My wife wants to trade her car so she can get back into something with three pedals. I'd go mad with only two!

I do not know anyone who can drive that doesn't know how to drive stick.

Hold on to that one! My wife can drive my car, but I think she generally prefers driving an automatic.

In the UK it is mandatory to learn stick to get a full license. it is likely that if autos become as prevalent here as in the US (75% of new cars sold in the UK are manual as opposed to 6% in the US) then people will not mind doing an Auto only test but they will never be legally allowed to drive a manual. I'd probably say it's less than 5% of UK drivers are auto only.

Great law.
Does the "take rate" on manuals there seem to be dropping at all, or is it holding steady?

It's dropped 8% since the turn of the millenium. Which isn't that drastic considering the amount of good press the new auto have got. It may be dying in the US, but it'll never die in the UK, it's ingrained in law, sales and culture. In the US a stick driver may be considered an enthusiast, in the UK it's normal which may be down to some of the economic hardships experienced over decades (like post WW2 rationing, oil crisis, recessions) that combined with smaller roads and towns dictate that smaller and more efficient (not anymore with new automatic technology) manual cars are the right choices. during the 50's and 60's when the UK was still recovering from the war, The US was prosperous with large roads and large extravagant cars with luxurious auto trans.
Maybe American Jalops are secret Europeans.

You should all come and live at my house, we can drive stick all night long. also, I've driven LHD stick cars and it wasn't difficult, you guys should have no issue going to RHD after your immigration to the UK.
